June 8th is Family Health and Fitness Day and the Braselton Urgent Care team couldn’t be happier about it. We treat anyone from 6 months and older and we want all our patients to be happy and healthy. Here are some simple steps you can take to help get your family in tip top shape.

Make Good Health a Family Affair

Parents, if you want your children to live a healthy lifestyle, it starts with you. You may prefer to leave the kids at home and go to the gym, and that’s ok sometimes, but make those healthy activities part of their routine as well. Plan fun activities that include the whole family and let your kids see you moving, laughing and living. When it comes to doing chores, the same rules apply. Everybody helps, everybody moves, and everybody gets to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Eat the Colors of the Rainbow

Family meals don’t have to be unpleasant and you can help your kids enjoy healthy foods by teaching them to eat the colors of the rainbow. There are fun and colorful books, such as “I Can Eat a Rainbow” to help you train them to eat the good stuff.

Take Good Care of Your Mental Health

Life outside the home can be stressful for parents and children, so take steps to make your home life happy and peaceful. When you are together, keep conversations light and focus mainly on the good things. Laughter really is good medicine, so tell a joke; giggle a little.

If you have problems to discuss, try to schedule a specific time for that, and keep all other conversations positive, especially around the table.

It goes without saying, that if your children have a problem and need to talk, take time to listen. You may not have all the answers, but just showing you care will help your child feel better.

Reduce the Screen Time

Today’s technology can be quite entertaining, but quite addictive as well. Make sure you limit your own screen time when the kids are around and of course, limit theirs as well. Books are an excellent replacement!
